The life force—the Oran Mhor, the Great Song of the universe—all that is, was, will be, or exists only in potentia.

Brian originally called Ekstasis "the glad fly"—and my original perception of him was of something small, one of the tiny lights of faery. But when s/he turned out to be one of those chosen for the deck, I began to look more deeply. As I did, I began to perceive that I was seeing a cosmic vastness, huge beyond belief, as if from a great distance. And it was clear that this was the Song, the joyful breath of life that permeates all beings, all things, from universes to the smallest particles.

At that point, suddenly the concept of "the Song" and "the Singers" was so clear. I knew it wasn't just "energy" and the Singers didn't want to be called angels or devas or anything else but Singers of the Great Song—the Oran Mhor. Simon and Schuster didn't want me to use capital letters in the book for Song and Singer - or for names like Earthmother. They really didn't understand that those were proper names of actual beings, and they had a little fetish thing about not using capital letters. They wanted me to say "earth mother" (I won that one, mostly) and "song" (I lost that one.) (So, if you all would kindly mentally capitalize Song wherever you see it in the book, I'd appreciate it.)

... may the Song sing brightly through each of us!
